Madison County School System to buy 272 acres for future expansion
Reading time: 2 minutes

The Madison County School System will purchase approximately 272 acres in the Hazel Green/Toney area—near Pulaski Pike and Patterson Lane, south of Grimwood Road and west of Murphy Hill Road. The Board of Education voted unanimously to approve the purchase.
Rapid growth in the area has necessitated expansion for the school system, which currently serves more than 20,500 students across 31 campuses.

What will the MCSS use the land for?

Planning is still in the early stages, but MCSS Board President David Vess shared that the vision is for a potential “all-inclusive educational campus” that would include a new high school, a middle school, elementary school and district office.
The district office component would address a long-term operational need, according to MCSS officials. Relocating district operations (current Central Office is located directly next to the Madison County Career Technical Center) would provide an opportunity to expand the space available to support Career Tech and improve program offerings at the existing site.
“This purchase represents a significant step forward in ensuring Madison County Schools is positioned to meet the needs of our students and staff for generations to come. We’re grateful to the Bragg family for their partnership in this process, and we look forward to sharing our vision for this property with the community as planning moves forward.”

For some perspective on the size and potential of the property, Vess also noted that the existing Hazel Green campus—which includes Hazel Green Elementary School, Hazel Green High School and the new Hazel Green Middle School scheduled to open in August 2027—encompasses approximately 189 acres.
