Mark Russell inducted into Alabama Sports Officials Hall of Fame

Mark Russell is a name known throughout Huntsville, as his experience on the Huntsville City Council and his current work as the director of the Huntsville Sports Commission place him firmly in the public eye.

But another hat he wears, so to speak, has given him statewide recognition as he was recently inducted into the Alabama Sports Officials Hall of Fame.

A 1981 Huntsville High School graduate, Russell played high school football and served as a captain for the Panthers his senior year. He went on to continue his education at Auburn University where he received a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration.

Russell has served on the North Alabama Lacrosse Association Board, Huntsville Ice Skating Complex Board of Control and the Alabama Sports Officials Foundation Board, among other organizations.

But for nearly three decades, he has officiated high school football, which has allowed him to give back to the sports community.

“I officiate high school football because I love the game and the life lessons it teaches. Sports have a unique way of building community, and there’s no better example of that than Friday nights in high school football.

Officiating gives me a fun and meaningful way to give back, support student‑athletes, and stay connected to a sport that has shaped so many lives—including my own.”

• In recognition of his impact, the City of Huntsville opened the Mark Russell Recreation Center in 2020.
