New cannabis medical dispensary now open in Athens — first in North Alabama
Reading time: 2 minutes

The first cannabis medical dispensary north of Talladega officially opened on Monday, September 14, after nearly five years of legal battle in the courts.
Bama Bloom is a family-owned dispensary that sells medical products like gel cubes, chewable tablets, tinctures, oral drops and creams — but absolutely no raw plant materials, products administered by smoking or edible products like cookies.
- 📍 Address: 809 US Hwy 72 W Suite A/B, Athens, AL 35611
- 📅 Hours: Mon-Fri, 10AM-6PM | Sat + Sun closed
- 👉 Coming Soon: Bama Bloom plans to open two more locations in Birmingham and Etowah County
Back in 2021, Governor Kay Ivey signed Alabama’s medical cannabis law, and now we are seeing the slow rollout of cannabis medical dispensaries in the state.
Bama Bloom is only the third such dispensary in Alabama, with the others being located in Montgomery and Talladega.

Who can purchase from the Bama Bloom cannabis medical dispensary?
On March 9, Bham Now covered a new cannabis medical dispensary coming to Birmingham — check it out! 👆
Obviously, the average Joe can’t waltz into the store and purchase whatever they’d like — there are strict regulations in place regarding who can buy. Patients will have a few boxes to check:
- 👉 Be registered with the Alabama Medical Cannabis Commission (complete an in-person health examination + submit details online)
- 📃 Receive a medical cannabis recommendation from an AMCC-licensed doctor
- 🪪 Have a valid ID
Bama Bloom also offers private consultation services for patients who may feel overwhelmed or want expert advice.
