Meet Elizabet—an Uruguayan artist who recently moved to Huntsville
Reading time: 4 minutes

March is Women’s History Month, and we’re telling stories of the impactful women in our community.
About a month ago, I had the pleasure of meeting Elizabet Castro—a highly-esteemed artist who’s lived in seven countries. I couldn’t believe that she was now living in Huntsville and I got the chance to chat casually with her.
This is her story.

About Elizabet P. Castro

Listening to Elizabet’s biography will take you on an extraordinary journey around the world. Having lived in seven different countries, this is how she describes herself:
“I am an Uruguayan visual artist with a nomadic spirit, whose journey has been marked by living in seven different countries, each one having given me a unique vision of myself and the world around me.”
Elizabet Castro
Originally from Uruguay, Elizabet has lived in the following countries:
- Uruguay
- Germany
- South Korea
- Israel
- Mexico
- Austria
- The United States
During the interview with Elizabet, she told me that sometimes she thinks about her identity and how difficult it’s been to put down roots in a single location because she’s moved so many times—sometimes due to her artistic journey, other times because of her husband’s job. She hopes Huntsville will be the place where she can feel at home.
Recently, Elizabet came to Huntsville with her husband for his job, and so far, she’s loved it.
“I’m a very social person and I love greeting and smiling at people.
When I came to Huntsville, it was during the Christmas season, and I remember calling my friends in Mexico and telling them, ‘How beautiful this city is! Everyone waves and smiles at me.’ One time, I forgot my card at the grocery store, and a lady stepped in and paid for me.”

Check out her incredible artwork
We are privileged to have such a talented artist like Elizabet in our city. She not only attended a prestigious university in Germany—Bad Reichenhall’s Art Academy—she’s also won impressive awards, such as:
- 2004: Third place in the I.C.A.K | Korean International Culture Association
- 2005: Special prize at the Korean International Arts Exhibition, Metropolitan Museum of Art in Seoul
- 1975: First place in Art Collage in the National Art Competition in Uruguay
One thing that makes Elizabet unique as an artist is that she is not defined by one artistic style—she paints in many different styles. In the gallery on her website, you can find landscape, abstract, constructive and Oriental art.
The foundation of all of her art is to capture “the little daily moments, powerful and full of meaning.”
“In my artwork, like in a musical piece, I leave a record of striving to communicate the unknown dwelling within me, serving as a constant reminder that, even though uncertainty and loneliness can be constant companions, they are also powerful muses that have inspired me to create beauty and encounter feeling in every corner of the world.”
