Sometimes the best things in life are unexpected. Before becoming a nurse, Kesley Butler always thought she’d be a chef.
However, she now works in the Huntsville Hospital ER and has an impressive educational portfolio. Recently obtaining her master’s, she’s currently pursuing two post-master’s certificates and will eventually procure her doctorate. Read on to learn how Kesley has learned to manage her time and save lots of money while getting her degrees.
Working in Huntsville
Kesley has worked at Huntsville Hospital for almost five years and in the ER for nearly three years. Although she works night shifts, she’s learned how to adjust her schedule to be awake during the days so she can spend time with family and friends.
While working these three 12-hour night shifts a week, she’s also pursuing two post-master’s certificates at UNA (The University of North Alabama). However, her online programs are super flexible, so she’s able to work full time while completing her coursework at her own pace and saving serious money during the process.
Because of UNA’s partnership with Huntsville Hospital, full-time employees like Kesley receives 20% off tuition.

Continuing her education
Since Kesley has already obtained her Master of Science in Nursing from UNA, she is now pursuing family nurse practitioner and psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner post-master’s certificates. It can be hard working full time while continuing her education, but UNA and Huntsville Hospital have both been accommodating throughout the process.
“Huntsville Hospital has made it a much easier transition by working with my schedule, allowing me to complete clinical hours and adjusting my hours when necessary. Plus, my programs at UNA have been very lenient and accommodating and have helped me avoid stress while furthering my education.”

After she obtains her post-master’s certificates, she plans to procure her doctorate from UNA. She then will work as a Nurse Practitioner at Huntsville Hospital with the long-term goal of opening up her own practice.

Still has time for cooking, baking + her fur babies
Before taking the nursing world by storm, Kesley originally planned to become a chef.
“I always tell people—before I completely decided to be a nurse, I wanted to be a chef. I still love to cook, entertain and host parties with all my friends.”

Even though Kesley is not working as a chef, she still has time to pursue that hobby because her work schedule and online classes provide her convenient flexibility. When not working, studying or cooking, she also enjoys playing with her dogs, visiting Campus 805 and taking “daycations” to top Southeast destinations.
