Huntsville has a vibrant art community, with a bevy of super-talented artists across a variety of media. One of those incredibly talented artists here in the Rocket City is Timothy Joe.

If you don’t know who he is or have never seen his work, you need to. Here’s why:

Get to know Timothy Joe

Timothy Joe grew up in Alabama’s Black Belt and ended up in Huntsville as an engineering student at UAH. After landing a job as an engineer on Redstone Arsenal, has remained in the area ever since.

So how did this mechanical engineer begin his journey as an accomplished artist?

“My art journey began in my childhood drawing comic book characters at home and school when there was time. In middle school, I started oil painting because a kind artist on Alabama Public Television said I could do it and I never looked back.

Over the years, my art matured to the point where I am teaching art workshops, gallery exhibitions, painting overseas and selling commissioned art.”

Joe has been commissioned to do multiple pieces, and even has a commissioned piece permanently displayed in the governor’s mansion in Montgomery.

Choosing a favorite artistic medium is not easy for Joe. He has experience with graphite, calligraphy, charcoal, gouache, acrylic, oil paints and soft pastels. He says his preferred medium depends greatly on what he is painting.

“The subject matter chooses the medium for me. I would have to say that soft pastels would take the prize. I love opening my pastel box to see an exciting arrangement of colors.”

Joe says his inspiration comes largely from the ability of art to tell a specific story. He does a great deal of research on the subjects of his paintings so he can properly tell the story.

“I love creating art that records stories from the past as reminders for us to appreciate life. I believe the backstory of my subject is just as important as the color I choose to paint. If I don’t tell its story, no one will.”
