A major road project by the Alabama Department of Transportation that had closed lanes on Memorial Parkway is finally complete. After a 3-year wait, the US-231/US-431 Memorial Parkway mainline and overpass at Mastin Lake Road in Huntsville is now open.
Construction began in June 2023, and expanded US-231/US-431 to a four-lane limited access mainline with two-lane frontage roads in each direction. The overpass now carries a total of six lanes over Mastin Lake Road.

Memorial Parkway overpass is finally open, but work is still underway

The overpass is the centerpiece of a $34 million project to improve traffic flow by extending the Memorial Parkway expressway. It will greatly reduce congestion at the Mastin Lake Road intersection.
“Completing the Memorial Parkway overpass at Mastin Lake Road is a major win for Huntsville’s transportation infrastructure. Drivers can now travel Memorial Parkway for more than 10 miles through the heart of the city with no traffic signals and no intersections, which enhances the flow of traffic and helps everyone get to their destination safely.”
Mayor Tommy Battle
While the road is fully open to traffic, the area remains an active work zone, with final paving ongoing.
The intersection under the overpass will stay temporarily closed to through traffic on Mastin Lake Road and all left turns. ALDOT anticipates the intersection reopening later in October 2026 with the addition of U-turn lanes.
