Anyone who has ventured downtown in the last few years has seen that tons of work has been happening on Monroe Street, and at this week’s Huntsville City Council meeting, more improvements to the street were approved.

The council approved a contract with Miller & Miller, Inc. to make streetscaping improvements to the major downtown corridor.

The project will span 1,000 linear feet of Monroe Street between Williams and Clinton avenues and include:

  • New sidewalks
  • Streetlights
  • Landscaping
  • Irrigation
  • Asphalt resurfacing

This project is part of ongoing efforts to revitalize the area, especially with the final completion of the Trilogy Hotel across from the Von Braun Center.

“We’re excited to bring these improvements to Monroe Street, enhancing both its functionality and aesthetic appeal. With the ongoing redevelopment in the area, these upgrades will help create a more vibrant, welcoming environment for residents and visitors alike.”

Mayor Tommy Battle

The area has already seen several redevelopment initiatives, including improvements to the Von Braun Center and a new city parking deck within this area.

With the completion of these projects, the City plans to add landscaping and irrigation, two large decorative pedestrian crossings — one near the parking deck and the other near Big Spring Park — and resurfacing the entire roadway.

Work is expected to be completed within 90 days after notice to proceed is issued.
