How did Monte Sano achieve the Leave No Trace Gold Standard?

Leave No Trace is a membership-based nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting the outdoors through science-based education that inspires responsible recreation.

Gold Standard is Leave No Trace’s highest form of recognition. Sites, organizations and programs that achieve Gold Standard designation are recognized nationally and internationally for their implementation of Leave No Trace.

The designation process provides a framework for building a well-developed Leave No Trace educational program that results in better-informed visitors and fewer recreation-related impacts.

The “Gold” status indicates that the park excels at educating visitors on minimizing their footprint, preserving wildlife habitats and adhering to the 7 Principles of Leave No Trace:

  1. Plan ahead and prepare.
  2. Travel and camp on durable surfaces.
  3. Dispose of waste properly.
  4. Leave what you find.
  5. Minimize campfire impacts
  6. Respect wildlife
  7. Be considerate of others
