The Moscow Mule, a classic cocktail made with vodka, spicy ginger beer and lime juice and served in a copper mug (to keep it cold), has become one of the most popular drinks ordered in bars throughout the country. Most cocktail historians say the Moscow Mule was invented in a Los Angeles bar in 1941 when a bartender was trying to empty the bar’s overstock of ginger beer. That’s the legend, at least.

Like mixologists are prone to do, many of Huntsville’s bartenders have tweaked the recipe to make their own signature versions of the drink. Hville Blast looked at some of the Huntsville area’s bars and restaurants to find the most unique takes on the “mule.” Here are five of the city’s best. Cheers!

1. The Mars Mule at Rhythm on Monroe

Rhythm on Monroe, located at 700 Monroe St SW, Huntsville, AL, 35801, has plenty of unique libations on their menu, but one that stands out to this writer is the Mars Mule.

The Mars Mule is made with Tito’s vodka, blood orange, lime juice, ginger beer and mint.

Rhythm on Monroe is open for brunch Saturday and Sunday at 11AM, and Mon. – Friday at 4PM.

2. The Summer Mule at Stella’s Elixir Lounge

There are actually five different variations of the mule at Stella’s Elixir Lounge at 127 Holmes Ave NW Ste 202, Huntsville, AL 35763. My favorite, however, is the Summer Mule.

The Summer Mule is aptly named, as it includes fresh muddled blueberries and cucumber, a little lime and blackberry syrup, a shot of New Amsterdam gin, and Gosling ginger beer.

Stella’s is open Mon. – Sun. starting at 3PM.

3. The Strawberry Basil Mule at The Brass Tap

The Brass Tap, in addition to having one of the best beer selections in town, also offers multiple variations of the Moscow Mule. (Brass Tap via Facebook)

The Brass Tap, located at The Shops of Merchants Walk at 933 Bob Wallace Ave SW #209, Huntsville, AL 35801, already has one of the best beer selections in Huntsville, and also has an extensive selection of cocktails, including a few different variations of the mule.

The Strawberry Basil Mule is made with Wheatley Vodka, strawberry, purée, Q Ginger Beer, basil and lime juice. A perfect summer drink!

The Brass Tap is open Mon-Sun at 11AM.

4. The Kentucky Mule at The Pourhouse

I am a pretty adamant fan of bourbon, and the Pourhouse, located at 3414 Governors Dr SW, Huntsville, AL 35805, offers a variation of the Moscow Mule that is right up my alley: the Kentucky Mule.

The Kentucky Mule includes Kentucky bourbon, fresh lime juice and ginger beer.

The Pourhouse is open Mon. – Sat. at 11AM and Sundays at 12PM.

5. Strawberry Kiwi Mule at Drake’s

A popular sports bar in Huntsville, Drake’s is located at 4800 Whitesburg SE Suite 14, Huntsville, AL 35802.

Drake’s twist on the Moscow Mule is the Strawberry Kiwi Mule, which consists of Tito’s Vodka, ginger syrup, lime juice, kiwi puree, strawberry puree and Regatta Ginger Beer.

Drakes is open Mon. – Sun. at 11AM.
