Muscle Shoals City Schools selects new superintendent

Muscle Shoals City Schools has a new superintendent, as Dr. Jon Bret Smith was appointed to the role last week by the Muscle Shoals Board of Education.
Smith had previously been superintendent for Lawrence County Schools, a role he had served since 2017.

Dr. Smith brings more than two decades of education experience to Muscle Shoals City Schools. Over the coming weeks, the board will nail down his contract and start introducing him around the community.
Here’s a little background on Dr. Smith:
- Currently serves as District 8 President for the School Superintendents of Alabama
- Peers named him District 8 Superintendent of the Year in 2023
- Serves as an adjunct professor at the University of Alabama
- Was appointed by the governor as a board member for the Workforce, Innovation & Opportunities Act
- Was the principal of East Lawrence Middle School and Hatton Elementary School before becoming superintendent for Lawrence County Schools

Smith will officially begin his tenure at Institute Day on August 3.
