1. Join professional programs + organizations

Leadership Greater Huntsville is a great place to start building a network in Huntsville, and it offers programming for every career stage.

  • Focus for newcomers to Huntsville
  • Connect for emerging leaders
  • Management Academy for managers sharpening skills
  • Leadership Flagship for senior leaders
  • Challenge + Spark for students

Bryant Bank Senior VP of Private Banking Kristie Ray has participated in the Focus and Connect (C-28) programs and said they immediately opened doors to where she wanted to get involved next, including Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Tennessee Valley, the Madison Chamber of Commerce and the Huntsville Hospital Foundation Development Council.

“If we can be that springboard, then we’re very blessed to do that for others.”
– LGH CEO Christie Finley

2. Focus on what you can give

Walk into every networking opportunity with a service mindset, considering what you bring to the table for the people you’re meeting.

“Think about what you provide that no one else can and that adds value for the professionals you want to network with, not ‘I need to make sure I get as many contacts as possible so I can get a job or promotion.’ Reframing your mindset makes everything more approachable.”
– LGH Program Director for Connect, Challenge & Marketing Kayla Clark Hanes

You’ve chosen a group or event, so now what? LGH Flagship Program Director Diana King offers these small habits that make a big difference in making the right impression:

  • 🎯 Target 3 people you want to meet to keep the experience manageable.
  • 👋 Have your card or digital contact info ready to share intentionally + confidently.
  • 📱 Take quick notes on who you’ve met, when + how for smooth follow-ups.
  • 🤝 Wear your nametag on the right, as it sits on a natural sightline when shaking hands.

4. Get involved in 1 signature community event

LGH COO Ed Nichols shared advice that made a big difference in how he learned to network in Huntsville early in his career: Choose one big community event that attracts people from throughout the community, show up, offer to help and stay involved.

Even if you’re moving tables and chairs, you’re likely to meet people you wouldn’t in a young professionals group. Better yet, many organizations are actively seeking younger people to join and serve on committees, he added.

“Just plug yourself into what I always call the heartbeat of the community. You find your place where your heart beats with it.”
– LGH COO Ed Nichols

5. Exit gracefully + gratefully

Great networkers know how to exit conversations gracefully; the good ones you can always pick up again later with a follow-up, which is the point.

“It was great meeting you, and thank you for your time,” usually sends the right message and leaves the door open for later. Everyone understands time is at a premium.

And on that note, we won’t keep you any longer— we bet you’ve got some networking to do!
