Addressing a need that civic leaders have discussed for years, the City of Huntsville is moving forward with support for the $22 million redevelopment of Huntsville Summit Apartments into Meridian Commons, a modern senior housing community.

The project is expected to start in early 2026 and be completed by mid-2027.

Led by local nonprofit Neighborhood Concepts, the proposed redevelopment will involve acquisition, demolition and new construction to transform the property into updated, accessible housing.

Meridian Commons will serve residents ages 62 and older, or those with disabilities, offering a safe, modern and affordable option in downtown Huntsville.

Community Development–a division of Huntsville’s Urban & Economic Development–will contribute $4.73 million in federal Emergency Rental Assistance 2 (ERA2) funds toward the effort.

The project will leverage more than $17 million in additional investment to create 100 affordable rental units for low-income seniors and disabled residents.

Located at 111 Walker Avenue NE, the redevelopment is also being made possible through $14.4 million in favorable financing from Redstone Federal Credit Union. City leaders said this commitment was instrumental in making the project financially feasible and ensuring the redevelopment could move forward.

“This redevelopment ensures our seniors can age in place with dignity and stability. By leveraging federal resources and private investment, the City is preserving affordable housing while revitalizing a key downtown property.”

Mayor Tommy Battle

Temporary accommodations for current residents will be made, and costs associated with temporary relocation will be covered. Also, residents will be given the first opportunity to return to the new Meridian Commons community once construction is complete.
