New Aldridge Creek railroad bridge funding approved by City Council

The City of Huntsville entered into a funding agreement with the Huntsville-Madison County Railroad Authority (HMCRA) to assist in replacement of the Aldridge Creek railroad bridge.
The project also includes other upgrades along the railroad. Here’s more:
City to contribute $800k to the railroad project

The Aldridge Creek Bridge, connecting Green Cove Road and Hobbs Island Road, collapsed in July. The city is contributing $800,000 to the project with the total cost of the project being $6.3 million.
Remaining funds will be paid for by:
- HMCRA
- Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs (ADECA)
- 2022 Federal Railroad Administration Consolidated Rail Infrastructure and Safety Improvement (CRISI) grant.
The HMCRA was previously awarded the CRISI grant from the Federal Railroad Authority for $3,467,110 to assist in providing safety, efficiency and capacity improvement to the existing railway owned by the HMCRA.
In addition to the replacement bridge, the improvements include:
- Installation of new cross ties
- Resurfacing 13.25 track miles
- Construction of 7,115 feet of new siding capacity
- Adding 100 feet to an existing transload track
