Originally built in 1965 as a gymnasium, Carter Gymnasium is now the largest public venue for civic events in the area. The new version of the facility will be a multipurpose venue that can host a variety of events.

Athens State has set aside approximately $22 million in plant and supplemental appropriations from the State of Alabama, which are earmarked for use towards renovation costs.

In addition, the City of Athens will provide $3.9 million for the project and the Limestone County Commission will contribute $4 million.

Here’s what to know about the event space:

  • Constructing 19,600 square feet of new space on the south side of the structure (facing Hobbs Street)
  • 8,100 square feet of new space on the north side (facing Pryor Street).
  • The renovation of gym space to create capacity for approximately 1,100 individuals
  • Movable partitions to allow for multiple event configurations to occur simultaneously
  • A multi-purpose space on the north side with a seating capacity of approximately 700

Construction is scheduled to begin in Fall 2025 with anticipated completion in 18-24 months. Martin & Cobey will serve as the construction manager for the project.

“It’s a powerful example of what we can accomplish when we work together to invest in our future. Having a beautiful and much-needed set of spaces in both levels of Carter Hall will provide our community with a vibrant hub for collaboration and more. These renovated spaces will serve as a welcoming and inspiring environment for all who walk through our doors.”

Dr. Catherine Wehlburg, President of Athens State University
