The Rocket Center has established the Founders Award to recognize individuals or groups who have made significant contributions to the advancement of the Center and its Space Camp programs.

Iris, Margrit and Peter are the children of Dr Wernher and Maria von Braun, who were instrumental in the formation of the Rocket Center, which opened March 17, 1970.

Dr. von Braun petitioned the Alabama state legislature in the 1960s for the establishment of the Center for the purpose of showcasing Alabama’s contributions to space exploration.

He was the first director of NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center and led the team that developed the Saturn V rocket that launched Apollo astronauts to the Moon.
