New Big Spring Park East expansion gets final design plan
Reading time: 2 minutes

As the former Huntsville City Hall building demolition nears completion, a new project will soon begin. An expansion to Big Spring Park East will replace what was the City Hall property for more than five decades.
The City of Huntsville unveiled the plans for the expansion this week.
More on the expansion of Big Spring Park
City leaders unveiled the final designs for an expansion of Big Spring Park East to the Huntsville Planning Commission for its approval yesterday.
The project re-imagines the former City Hall site at 308 Fountain Circle as a dynamic public greenspace, adding approximately 2.4 acres to the heart of downtown’s signature park.
Here’s what the expansion includes:
- Multiple terraced plaza levels for gathering + relaxing
- A central pavilion with a green roof for hosting events + community programs
- New sidewalk and hardscape connections to Church Street
- Improved ADA access through a gently winding path reminiscent of San Francisco’s Lombard Street
- Landscaping upgrades including irrigation, shade trees, rain gardens + enhanced lighting
- A children’s playground
- Public art installations and a calming water feature to help buffer downtown noise
- New crosswalk
- Tree-lined median on Church Street
- Lower terrace that links Big Spring Park East and West, providing an urban overlook of the park’s signature ponds
- Public art + shaded seating
- Terraced walks + walls
Chad Bostick with Bostick Landscape Architects and Frank Nola of Nola VanPeursem presented the plan, which finalizes the expansion design.
““Big Springs Park is the living room for the City of Huntsville, and has been the hub of development from the city’s inception. This opportunity to create connectivity to the existing sections and align the open space throughout and towards the square helps make the city more inviting for residents to slow down, enjoy the moment and appreciate the beauty of our city!”

The City plans to take bids on the park expansion project in July. Construction is expected to be complete by the end 2026.
