New Big Spring Park expansion to cause traffic issues downtown

Some big changes are happening at Big Spring Park, including a major expansion project. With that expansion will come several traffic delays and road closures downtown over the next week or so.

The City of Huntsville released the construction schedule for next week, which includes lane closures on Church Street.

Church Street lane closures at Big Spring Park

Although the work on the park will cause closures and delays throughout the expansion project (expected to conclude next spring), the city announced this week that traffic on Church Street will be impacted during four days specifically:

Tuesday, May 26: Church Street lane closures will begin with the northbound outside lane being affected for removal and replacement of the sidewalk. The lane is expected to reopen on Tuesday, June 23.

Tuesday, June 23: The median will close from Huntsville Utilities to Williams Avenue as work begins on building a tree-lined median on Church Street. The work is expected to be completed by Friday, July 10.

Friday, July 10: The two northbound lanes will close, and northbound and southbound traffic will continue with single lanes utilizing the two southbound lanes. The lanes are expected to reopen on Wednesday, July 29.

Wednesday, July 29: The two southbound lanes will close, and northbound and southbound traffic will continue with single lanes utilizing the two northbound lanes. The lanes are expected to reopen on Friday, Aug. 14.
