In a special-called meeting Monday, March 23, the Decatur City Council approved up to $3 million toward a new Calhoun Community College baseball and softball complex, proposed near the Tennessee River Bridge.

With a 4-0 council vote in favor, the mayor can now negotiate project details on the city’s behalf with the Alabama Community College System and Decatur Utilities. District 1 Councilman Terrance Adkins was not present for the meeting.

What’s proposed

As we reported last week, Calhoun Community College seeks to build a sports complex in Decatur at 105 10th Avenue N.E., half a mile from the Tennessee River Bridge and just off the Sixth Avenue corridor.

In addition to baseball and softball fields with covered stadium seating for Calhoun Warhawks fans and visiting guests, Calhoun also envisions residential dorms at the site.

The approved resolution states that the Decatur council supports the project because it:

  • benefits the city and the general well-being of citizens
  • brings economic development, recreational activities + general financial benefits
  • otherwise enhances the city’s entrance corridor

“What the college system is looking for is a commitment from the city for up to $3 million to make sure that the project can go forward.”
Decatur City Attorney Herman Marks

Marks summarized that the sum would cover:

  • purchasing the property to supplement the land ACCS has already bought
  • removing + relocating some electrical utilities on the property
  • relocating Decatur Utilities to other locations

Officials and legal teams from the city, Decatur Utilities and ACCS will meet, prepare an agreement and return to the council for approval. Marks added that additional public notice about design plans and other details will be given as negotiations progress.
