New digital highway message boards coming to Huntsville
Reading time: 2 minutes

You have likely seen these when traveling just about anywhere in the country, but digital traffic signs are popping up all over the nation’s highways, and some new ones are coming to the Huntsville area.
The City of Huntsville and the Alabama Department of Transportation entered into a funding agreement that will place digital highway message signs along U.S. 72 East, U.S. 431 and U.S. 231.

The new signs will be similar to the two that are located on Interstate 565 (third message board on I-565 is in the process of completion).
The agreement, finalized by Huntsville City Council last week, totals $3.1 million. The Federal Carbon Reduction Program will cover 80% of the cost ($2.48 million) and the city will cover 20% ($640,000).
“We have experienced the benefits of this technology on Interstate 565 and we look forward to the construction of more message boards. These signs inform drivers about what’s ahead and will make our roadways even safer.”
Mayor Tommy Battle
Additional message boards will be located on Memorial Parkway, Governors Drive and another on U.S. 72 East near Chapman Mountain. The exact locations have not been determined.
