The City of Huntsville unveiled its plan for the future of the historic Goldsmith-Schiffman Field at a public meeting Tuesday night. The city sought input from the public and residents of District 2.

The new plan aims to “breathe new life” into the iconic football stadium.

What’s next for Goldsmith-Schiffman Field?

Plans for the field call for:

  • Two new flag football fields (30 yards by 70 yards), which are currently the primary use at the stadium
  • A playground with a rubberized surface
  • Pavilion with restroom facilities
  • Two pickleball courts

Parts of the stone wall that surround the stadium will be removed as part of the refurbishment. The facility sits in a floodplain and federal regulations mandate removing parts of the wall. The wall is also deteriorating in places.

The city plans to preserve the stone wall on the western side as well as on all four corners of the stadium, and the wall will be replaced by a chain link fence that will promote safety at the park.

Plans also call for a walking trail and accompanying benches throughout the park, and grassy mounds as play areas for children in addition to the playground. Ample amounts of shade are also planned for the park.

New lighting will also be part of the park as well as improved parking, ADA parking and accessibility.

Pending council approval, the city aims to begin construction in 2026. Renovations are expected to take about 15 months.
