Reading time: 3 minutes
After more than a year of renovations, Joe Davis Stadium in Huntsville re-opened to host the home games for the Huntsville City FC, our new professional soccer team.
Those who used to visit The Joe for Huntsville Stars games or high school football remember what it was, but what it has become has garnered nationwide attention, and placed the stadium in the running for a national award.
Joe Davis Stadium nominated for Best New or Renovated Sports Venue
The Wicks Family Field at Joe Davis Stadium has been nominated for the 2023 SportsTravel Award for Best New or Renovated Sports Venue. The stadium is one of six venues nominated for the award.
The SportsTravel Awards honor the best events, venues and hosts in the sports-event industry. The winners of the awards will be announced at an awards event Oct. 2–5 in West Palm Beach, Fla.
The venues up for the award include:
- Joe Davis Stadium & Wicks Family Field, Huntsville, Ala.
- Acrisure Arena, Palm Springs, Calif.
- Fort Lauderdale Aquatic Center, Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.
- Idaho Central Aquatic Center, Boise, Id.
- Legends Event Center, Bryan, Texas
- Memphis Sports & Events Center, Memphis, Tenn.
Joe Davis Stadium, the previous home of Minor League Baseball’s Huntsville Stars, is the only venue nominated for the award that previously and currently hosts different professional sports — now hosting the Huntsville City FC
The stadium, which can hold more than 6,000 fans, will soon host high school football and other events.
The remodeling project ran approximately $30 million, and began in late 2021 — before the announcement of the Huntsville City Football Club’s existence. The excitement surrounding not only the stadium itself but developments adjoining the stadium spread as the project came to fruition.
