New Madison road projects updated by city engineers

As Madison continues to grow, traffic is a major issue among residents and visitors. More people equals more cars, and that will always cause concern among a city’s citizens.

This week, the City of Madison’s engineering team presented an update on current and upcoming road projects across the city. These projects include resurfacing projects, new traffic signals, turn lane installments and more.

Madison’s current + upcoming road projects

At a meeting Wednesday, city leaders were given an update on multiple road projects throughout Madison. Some of these are in the procurement phase (acquiring the necessary materials and services), some are in the construction phase and others are currently relocating utilities in preparation of construction or ion the final punch list phase (final touches).

Here’s what these projects are and where they stand:

Gooch Road + Wall-Triana Hwy Intersection

• What: Signal improvements + sidewalk extension
• Cost: $700,000
• Status: Procurement

Balch Road + Gooch Road Intersection

• What: New roundabout
• Cost: $1.1 million
• Status: Utility relocation

Burgreen Road/Hardiman Road Intersection

• What: New traffic signal
• Cost: $420,000
• Status: Final punch list

Hughes Road + Old Madison Pike Intersection

• What: Signal improvement + lane addition
• Cost: $2.2 million
• Status: Utility relocation

Royal Drive Extension

• What: New road + traffic signal
• Cost: $1.35 million
• Status: Under construction

Bradley Street Improvements

• What: Lane widening, streetlights + sidewalks
• Cost: $675,000
• Status: Right-of-way acquisitions

Slaughter Road + Eastview Drive Intersection

• What: Signal improvements + turn lanes
• Cost: $970,000
• Status: Under construction

Mill Road + Sullivan Road Intersection

• What: Turn lanes, signal + sidewalk
• Cost: $2.3 million
• Status: Design phase (90%)

Hughes Road Sidewalk Extension

• What: Extending 5′ sidewalk on east side of Hughes Road north to Conger Road
• Cost: $1.1 million
• Status: Design phase (20%)

Powell Road + Burgreen Road Intersection

• What: New signal with turn lane
• Cost: $650,000
• Status: Right-of-way acquisition

Town Madison Blvd + I-565 Ramp

• What: Turn lanes, sidewalk extension + signal improvement
• Cost: $650,000
• Status: Design phase (90%)

Mill Road Bridge + Greenway

• What: Bridge/road widening + greenway extension
• Cost: $1 million
• Status: Design complete

Town Madison Multi-Use Trail

• What: Trail extension to Intergraph
• Cost: $650,000
• Status: Pre-design phase

Balch Road + Browns Ferry Road Intersection

• What: New roundabout
• Cost: $1.2 million
• Status: Design complete

Garner Street Extension

• What: Extend Garner Street to Madison Blvd + new signal
• Cost: $2.1 million
• Status: Design phase (90%)

Palmer Road Bridges

• What: Replace & lengthen two bridges near soccer fields to address floodplain impact
• Cost: $3 million
• Status: Design phase (90%)

Browns Ferry Road + Sullivan Road Intersection

• What: Turn lane, signal upgrade + sidewalk extension
• Cost: $1.2 million
• Status: Design phase (90%)

Mill Road + Balch Road Intersection

• What: New traffic signal
• Cost: $700,000
• Status: Design phase (60%)

Portal Lane Ditch Stabilization

• What: Stabilize the ditch along railroad tracks south of Portal Lane
• Cost: $850,000
• Status: Design complete
