The two baby bald eagles at Joe Wheeler State Park have officially been named. Last week, Alabama State Parks posted a list of potential names for the adorable eaglets and allowed park lovers vote for their favorites.

The winning names—River and Sky!

Below are the results of the contest.

The two baby eagles’ parents are Joe and Daniella, named after General Wheeler and his wife. They were born a little over a month ago, around January 1.

Here are some quick Alabama bald eagle history:

  • Bald eagles disappeared from Alabama in 1949.
  • By 1984, the state launched efforts to bring back our national symbol.
  • After six years, in 1991, the first confirmed successful nest was established.
  • Today, there are approximately 100 known nests in Alabama.
