New open-air skating rink coming to Stoner Park

On April 23 The Huntsville Planning Commission approved plans to construct a new open-air skating rink in Huntsville at Stoner Park.

The skating rink will bring some new architecture to the park and will be designed by a local firm.

The new skating rink, currently called Skate Huntsville, will be located in North Huntsville at Stoner Park. The new rink will be built as an open pavilion with new restrooms and landscaping.

Stoner Park currently has several community amenities including football and baseball fields, Multi-purpose fields, tennis courts, a playground and restrooms.

This will be Huntsville’s first outdoor skating rink, but there are other options for local skaters in town.

  • Get-a-Way Skate Park | John Hunt Park
  • Lydia Gold Skate Park | Downtown off Cleveland Ave
  • Insanity Skate Complex | 100 Skate Park Dr.

Who’s designing the park?

The design contract for the park has been given to local firm Nola VanPeursem.

Their previous work mostly centers around public and education buildings and includes:

  • Morton Hall remodel at UAH
  • Alabama A&M University Events Center
  • Huntsville Aquatics Center
  • James Clemons High School
  • The Avenue
