Of the 12 new building permits issued in Alabama this past week for construction projects exceeding $1 million, half of them are for projects in the Huntsville metro.

Two of those are for French Mill Crossing, a Publix-anchored shopping center on Mooresville Road in Athens.

New Publix in Athens

Two new building permits (totaling more than $11 million) were issued at addresses on Mooresville Road in Athens for what will be a new Publix supermarket. The development will help create approximately 115 new jobs and generate annual sales of approximately $22 million.

As part of the project, the City of Athens received a $400,000 Community Development Block Grant and Appalachian Regional Commission Grant funds through ADECA to help pay for right-of-way improvements on both Mooresville Road and U.S. 72.

The development, French Mill Crossing, will be built on a 12-acre site southeast of the Mooresville Road and U.S. Highway 72 intersection, near the Doomsday Paintball Park and Par 72 Driving Range.

ADECA Director Kenneth Boswell said the development of French Mill Crossing will likely lead to other commercial developments nearby, necessitating these road improvements.

Ram General Contractors is listed as the lead contractor for this project, and the development is expected to open in the fall of 2026.
