North Alabama’s ‘groundhog’ predicts an early spring is on its way
Reading time: 2 minutes

After the icy events a couple weekends ago, I think it’s safe to say that we’re all over the winter weather. The good news is that it may be on its way out according to North Alabama’s trusted prognosticating opossum from Albertville, AL.
This morning, Sand Mountain Sam delivered news opposite of what Pennsylvania’s Punxsutawney Phil declared. 👇
The legendary Sand Mountain Sam
For 34 years, Sand Mountain Sam has traveled via whiskey barrel to deliver the news of whether we can expect an early spring or another six weeks of winter. Only twice in the last 14 years has he seen his shadow, implying more winter.
This morning, I got to experience the event for myself. Over 100 devoted fans gathered at the WQSB FM radio station in Albertville to see the critter + hear his annual proclamation. With signs in hand, the community patiently awaited the legend’s arrival.
After crowning three ‘Opossum Queens’ + jamming out to a Sand Mountain Sam-themed twist on Elton John’s hit song “Rocket Man,” four men clad in camouflage, overalls, cowboy hats + boots carried the famous whiskey barrel containing the beloved opossum to the front of the crowd.
The verdict
Sand Mountain Sam emerged from the whiskey barrel with assistance from his handler, Chandler. As expected, he received a great round of applause + cheers. WHNT News 19’s meteorologist Ben Smith then read the proclamation, announcing that because Sam did not see his shadow, we will be graced with an early spring this year!
