Construction on the fourth and final phase of the Sandra Moon Community Complex is underway. This phase of the renovation project includes the former Grissom High School auditorium as well as other upgrades to accommodate events.
Here’s what to know:
Sandra Moon Complex construction
The planning sessions for this project began in 2015, two years before Grissom High School relocated to its new home on Haysland Road. Ground was broken in 2020.
The scope of work involved in this final phase of the project includes:
- The state-of-the-art, 14,000-square-foot, two-story facility will provide expanded space for music and dance programs, serving both current and future students.
- The new facility will be located adjacent to The Brick, with an additional 3,170-square-foot storage building to be constructed just north of the alley between First and Second Avenues in downtown Decatur.
- Construction is expected to take about 14 months, with the facility slated to open in January 2026.
- Refurbishing the two gymnasiums
- Enhancing the exterior with landscaping and lighting
- Seating will be reduced in the auditorium to create an intimate 611-seat theater with a new lobby and extensive improvements on back-of-house facilities to accommodate different types of events.
- A 300-seat event center will be constructed on the site of the school’s lunchroom.
KPS Group of Huntsville is the architect and Fite Building Company of Decatur is the general contractor for the $31.3 million project. Construction is expected to be completed in the first half of 2026.
