To improve the visual appeal of their giant water tank, Huntsville Utilities is collaborating with a local artist to turn the outside of the tank into an artistic landmark.

Where did this idea come from?

Councilmember Devyn Keith pitched this idea in response to concerns related to the District 1 area’s appearance, which includes North Huntsville and the Five Points area surrounding downtown.

The tank—located at the corner of Pulaski Pike and Sparkman Drive—was scheduled for refurbishment this year and is now a collaboration among Councilmember Keith, the City of Huntsville, Arts Huntsville and Huntsville Utilities.

“I’m thrilled that the water tank will be transformed into a work of art that embodies one of Huntsville’s public art goals – to add whimsy and delight to everyday spaces through artwork that lifts the spirits and engages the mind.”

Transformation of the water tank

The piece is titled Jubilation, and with the water tank as a canvas, will depict the vibrance of youth amidst a background of aquatic ambiance.

Peter “Float” Lucker is the local artist who will be heading the project, and is exemplifying how citizen engagement can lead to positive change. Jubilation‘s depiction of children is aimed at delivering a lightness to the area as well as an inspiration to other artists.

“I am always moved by how children can throw themselves into joy so wholeheartedly and with the headfirst energy of youth. I have created this design to bring that simple idea to this larger-than-life canvas.”

This art piece is set to be completed on the water tank during Fall of 2024, and will be among the dozens of large, public art featured around the city. If you’re curious about Huntsville’s murals, view our other article on 17 beautiful Huntsville murals you should check out.
