Reading time: 2 minutes

After the City of Decatur approved short-term rentals within the city limits last month, the city has launched an application portal for property owners who want to use their property for that purpose.
As of Wednesday, April 1, users can access the portal and submit applications for short-term rental certificates under the city’s new regulatory program.

Decatur accepting short-term rental applications

The Decatur Planning Department stated that staff are ready to start reviewing applications right away and expects most completed applications to be processed within 7 to 10 business days.
The portal (accessible HERE) establishes a consistent and transparent process, according to city leaders.
“It provides property owners with a clear pathway to operate responsibly, while also ensuring that each complete application is evaluated fairly and meets the standards designed to protect neighboring communities.”
Chad Bowman, Planning Director, City of Decatur
Property owners are encouraged to prepare the following information before beginning the application:
- Proof of property ownership or authorization to operate the rental
- A description or plan showing off-street parking accommodations
- Contact information for a local owner or agent within 50 miles
- Confirmation that the property is ready for the required safety inspection
Once submitted, applications will be reviewed by city staff to ensure compliance with established standards, including parking, safety and operational requirements.
Applicants will receive confirmation once their submission is successfully received, and may be contacted if additional information is needed during the review process.
A 90-day grace period is in place to allow time for education and compliance before monetary fines begin.
The City of Decatur will approve up to 150 short-term rental permits within eligible residential areas, as established by ordinance.
