Are you ready for a snow day? Well, if early week forecasts hold up, we will see a good bit of snow this weekend. According to the National Weather Service, “heavy snow” is predicted for Saturday, with freezing temperatures most of the weekend.

The NWS estimates 1-3 inches of snow in the Rocket City by the time Saturday is done.

WAAY-TV reported this morning that Saturday will include “A mix of wintry precipitation in the evening. Then periods of snow expected later at night.”

Do not expect the snow to melt quickly, as the high for Sunday is just 32 degrees, with a low of 20 degrees.

Here’s how the NWS sees the weekend looking:

  • Friday: A 30 percent chance of showers, mainly after noon. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 45
  • Friday night: A chance of rain or freezing rain before midnight, then a chance of snow showers and freezing rain
  • Saturday: Snow showers and freezing rain likely. Cloudy, with a high near 31
  • Saturday night: Snow showers and freezing rain likely. Cloudy, with a low around 20. Chance of precipitation is 60%
  • Sunday: A chance of rain or freezing rain. Partly sunny, with a high near 32.

In the event of a winter storm, make sure to follow NWS guidelines:

  • Ice and snow may lead to slick roads and walkways
  • Prepare for power outages
  • Dress warmly, in layers, in going outdoors
  • Care for pets
  • Motorists should have at least one-half tank of gas and equip vehicles with blankets, water, snacks and medical supplies
