Spooky season is in full swing in Huntsville, which means it’s time to revisit some of our city’s most eerie and spine-chilling places.

Halloween is never quite complete without sharing some of our city’s haunted histories. So, if you scare easily, be sure to get your ghost-hunting squad together to explore these five spooky Huntsville spots:

Dead Children’s Playground

The Dead Children’s Playground is said to be haunted by the souls of children buried nearby, but accounts as to why this is are contested among locals. (Audrey Johnson / Hville Blast)

Right across from the Maple Hill Cemetery lies the Dead Children’s Playground. Local stories have circulated about the buried children coming out to play after dark.

Spooky anecdotes of swings moving on their own and children’s laughter arising from out of nowhere have made this spot one of Huntsville’s most uncanny.

Historic Huntsville Depot

The Historic Huntsville Depot is Alabama’s oldest surviving rail depot and is said to hold the spirits of Civil War soldiers.

Rumors say these spirits still tread the grounds at night to keep watch over their old posts. The good news is that most ghost sightings occur on the second and third floors.

However, I wouldn’t want to test this theory in case a spooky spirit decides to inspect the trains on the property (such as the one pictured below).

Maple Hill Cemetery

Maple Hill Cemetery is Huntsville’s largest and oldest cemetery.

It is also home to the bodies (and spooky spirits) of the Bibb Family and Phillip Flannagan, among others.

With over 80,000 buried bodies, the cemetery is a major hub for some of Huntsville’s creepiest stories. Just be on the lookout, or you may learn more about these stories from the ghosts themselves!

Merrimack Hall

While Merrimack Hall is now a beloved performing arts center, it is said to still be home to the spirit of Charlie Foster. (Cooper Smitherman / Hville Blast)

Merrimack Hall was once a lively textile mill in Huntsville. However, many Huntsville residents now say it’s haunted by the spooky spirit of Charlie Foster.

Foster worked at the mill as a child in the 1900s, which contributed to the passing of the Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938 to protect children from enforced labor.

Perhaps Foster now watches over the mill to protect children from the horrors of enforced labor. Another possibility: is he seeking vengeance for the wrongdoing enacted upon him?

The Historic Lowry House

The Historic Lowry House is not only a former stop on the Underground Railroad, but it is also believed to be haunted by Anne Lowry as she watches over her home.

Accordingly, ghost tours have been held throughout the years to investigate this rumor and other claims of paranormal activity.
