Street in Research Park to be renamed for former astronaut

A street in Cummings Research Park will have a new name soon, honoring former astronaut Bob Stewart. Stewart, a retired U.S. Army brigadier general, served as deputy commanding general of the U.S. Strategic Defense Command at Redstone Arsenal.

Former astronaut, brigadier general honored

Stewart was a member of the Challenger and Atlantis Space Shuttle crews before being promoted to brigadier general in 1986.

He served as Deputy Commanding General, U.S. Army Strategic Defense Command in Huntsville, where he managed research efforts in developing ballistic missile defense technology.

In 1989 he was reassigned as the director of plans for U.S. Space Command in Colorado Spring. Stewart retired from the Army in 1992 and lives in Huntsville.

Bob Stewart Drive

What has been known as Eagle Drive in Cummings Research Park in Huntsville will now be known as Bob Stewart Drive, in honor of the former astronaut and retired brigadier general.

Bob Stewart Drive is west of Research Park Boulevard and north of Old Madison Pike.
