It started with a passion for music

There are countless cool records to browse through in Maxwell’s Music.

My favorite shops to visit are ones ran by someone with a true passion for their craft, and that’s Maxwell’s Music.

I chatted with owner Jarrod Maxwell who’s had this shop in Clinton Row since 2018. I talked to him about his shop and his impressive record collection.

“I’m a big time collector. I’ve been doing this almost 20 years, and I’ve got a whole other collection at home.”

Jarrod has a passion for vintage records and older music, and his music stretched across genres.

“I’ve done this long enough that there’s good in everything. When I was your age, I didn’t even know what Jazz was. Now, just my Jazz collection at home is around 600 albums.”

We bonded over our love for curating a personalized physical collection of music. It’s more than just a hobby—it’s your own personal collection that reflects your music taste and is guaranteed to stand the test of time. That’s why Jarrod does what he does.

If you love the old stuff, his shop is for you. Jarrod’s got a wide range of older music, all in excellent condition.

He’s also long time friends with Andy, owner of the iconic Vertical House Records at Lowe Mill.

I’ve known Andy at Vertical House for years. He’s on top of all the new stuff, so with my space being so small, it allows me to focus on the older stuff.

Jarrod loves that he can focus on his true passion: vintage records. A lot of the records in the shop are regional, so you’ll find all sorts of cool music that were popular in different areas.

Aside from offering a wide variety of old music, Jarrod is focused on curating a quality collection. No need to take each vinyl out of the sleeve to examine for scratches!

Our biggest focuses here are quality and condition—no record here has a scratch on it. I want to make sure you’re happy with whatever you buy.

Thanks to Jarod’s recommendations, I added some hip 80s-90s music to my mostly 2000s collection. (Elizabeth Hobbs / Hville Blast)

I took home two records from Maxwell’s Music after asking for recommendations based on my music taste (alt rock). He thoughtfully browsed through his collection, and presented me with two options, both of which I bought.

If you’re looking for something new to spice up your collection, just ask for your own rec. Jarrod is very knowledgable about his collection and I loved discovering these new artists he picked out for me.
