This Madison County School won a special award
A Madison County elementary school joined the list of schools honored with a National Blue Ribbon designation yesterday. Mt. Carmel Elementary in Huntsville was honored with the award that only five schools across Alabama earned.
The Alabama schools awarded with National Blue Ribbon status for 2023 are:
- Cordova Elementary in Cordova, Ala.
- Creekview Elementary in Maylene, Ala.
- Jefferson County International Baccalaureate School in Pleasant Grove, Ala.
- Mt. Carmel Elementary in Huntsville, Ala.
- Skyline High School in Scottsboro, Ala.
About Mt. Carmel Elementary School + Madison County Schools
The award winning school is a part of the Madison County School District. It had 646 students last fall in pre-k through third grade, and the student teacher ratio was 19 to 1.

This is the first time Mt. Carmel has ever won the Blue Ribbon designation according to the document the school submitted for review.
Why does being a National Blue Ribbon School matter?
The National Blue Ribbon School designation is the only award given by the U.S. Department of Education. Since its creation in 1983, over 9,000 schools across the country have earned the prestigious designation.
This year:
- 353 schools were awarded in 48 states.
- 313 of award winners were public schools.
- 74% of public schools awarded were elementary schools.

Mt. Carmel Elementary will be honored with other winning schools at a ceremony this November in Washington, D.C.
