Takairee “TK” Kenebrew is not your average MBA student. He’s the seventh-year senior star Wide Receiver at The University of North Alabama, loves writing music and has two daughters.
Read on to learn how he does it all and why his focus shifted from the NFL to becoming an accountant.
TK’s journey—football, accounting + more
Meet TK
Originally from Birmingham, TK moved to Childersburg and graduated from high school there. In 2018, he stepped on UNA’s campus as a freshman on a football scholarship. Due to facing several years of injuries, he’s now a seventh-year senior on the football team.
Outside of football and education, TK enjoys writing books, poems, playwrights and music. Because of his love for music, he named his daughters Harmony and Melody.
From NFL dreams to accounting goals
TK knew UNA was the college for him after one visit.
“It was my visit to UNA that sold me. The coaching staff treated me like family, and they connected me with the College of Business professors.
The Florence community is so wholesome, and the community pours so much into the school, students and athletes. All of that drove me to make my final decision.”

TK knew from the start that he wanted to major in accounting but thought he’d play in the NFL after college. However, during his first three years on the team, he faced serious injuries and was unable to play.
“Being injured switched my mindset from just wanting to make it to the NFL to focusing on my accounting degree and seeing how far I could make it with that.”

With this mindset shift, TK decided his next best step would be to pursue his MBA to prepare him for an accounting career.

The top-notch MBA program at UNA
It’s hard to imagine how TK can balance studying for his MBA and being a top UNA football star, but his coaches and professors have helped him find the right balance.
Here’s a typical day in his life:
“My body has naturally adjusted to waking up in the mornings from football, so I’m typically up around 5:30AM in the morning.
I start off going to workouts and therapy and then work on my classes until afternoon practice. Lastly, I finish up the day by studying and doing homework.”

He also shared a couple of examples of how his professors and coaches coordinate to help him get his coursework done:
- His professors schedule office hours with him, so TK can share when he will be out of town for games. They help him put together a plan for how he can finish his work on time.
- When UNA hosts a career or internship fair on campus, the football coaches give TK the time to attend so he can network and find internship opportunities.
TK’s already started studying for the CPA exam and plans to take the test upon graduation.
