Here is some good news for all Rocket City hikers.
Sand Mountain Sam, the legendary clairvoyant opossum from Albertville, predicted an early spring this month.
That means most of March will be nice and warm outdoors. Thank you Sam!
Are you ready to take advantage of an early spring and hit the trails?
Our good friends at the Land Trust of North Alabama have got you covered with a handy list of four locally guided hikes for March.
1. Hike at Hickory Cove – March 1

Looking for a nice afternoon stroll in the woods with neighbors and friends? The Hickory Cove Preserve’s Legacy Loop is a moderate 2 hour afternoon hike that is family friendly.
- Meet up time: March 1, 2:00PM to 4:00PM
- Location: Hickory Cove Nature Preserve – 1500 Trailhead Main St, Huntsville, AL 35811. Meet at the Trailhead Greenway parking lot..

2. Foraging Hike at Bethel Spring – March 8

Expect to see spring flowers blooming on this early morning journey. Forager Casey Lanier is leading this outings at Bethel Spring. He intends to take the group all the way to the waterfall. The route is rocky and the trail is steep in places, so please wear appropriate footwear and be ready for a moderately difficult climb. The 2-mile hike is moderate and will take about 3 hours.

3. Over the Rainbow Hike at Rainbow Mountain – March 9

Join members of Madison Greenways and Trails for a hike covering several of Rainbow Mountain’s newer and newly reworked trails. This hike will begin at the new Kensington Drive trailhead, follow Rainbolt Trail to Wild Trail, then down the newly renovated Spring Trail.
This 2.5 mile moderate hike will take between 2-2.5 hours. Another bonus — this is on the Sunday the clocks spring forward, so there will be an extra hour of sunshine.

4. Hike at Wade Mountain – March 22

If Sand Mountain Sam’s forecast is correct, spring will have fully arrived! The spectacular view from the top of the Devils Racetrack trail is on every local hiker’s bucket list.
The 4-mile hike lasts about 4 hours. Be prepared to take some beautiful snapshots of the view.
- Meet up time: March 22, 9:00AM to Noon
- Location: Wade Mountain Nature Preserve (Spragins Hollow Trailhead) – 10130 Spragins Hollow Road NW, Huntsville, AL 35810 (off of Winchester Road). Please note, this preserve has multiple trailheads – be sure to go to the right one!
