When the weather starts warming up — but isn’t too hot — folks want to get outdoors and get active. And there are few activities better for that than hiking.

We have highlighted some of the guided hikes here in the area, but what if you are a beginner going at it alone? Well, you can find several hikes here in the Huntsville area for the novice hiker.

Alum Hollow Trail at Green Mountain Nature Preserve

One of my favorite “easy hikes” is at Green Mountain Nature Preserve. Alum Hollow Trail is around a mile long and is relatively flat, and has some amazing scenery, including Alum Falls and Alum Cave – a rock overhang that the Native Americans used for shelter.

Location: 13800 SE S Shawdee Rd, Huntsville, AL 35803

North Plateau Loop at Monte Sano

This is about a 2-mile loop and also very scenic. The trail is open year-round and is beautiful to visit anytime. Dogs are welcome and may be off-leash in some areas.

Location: 5105 SE Nolen Ave, Huntsville, AL 35801

Three Caves at Monte Sano

This is one of the most popular trails in the area, and pretty easy in regard to elevation. It is about three miles long, and the scenery is fabulous.

Location: 901 Kennamer Dr SE, Huntsville, AL 35801

Indian Creek Greenway

The Indian Creek Greenway — which meanders north along the creek, bordered by farmland and woods — begins at Slaughter Road and runs northward for two miles from Old Madison Pike up to Creekwood Park. Another section north of Highway 72 runs one mile.

It will eventually total six miles and run to Old Monrovia Road when completed.

Location: 46 Hillcrest Ave NW. Huntsville, AL 35806

Madison County Nature Trail

Open to the public from sunrise to sunset every day, Madison County Nature Trail is a pleasant, 2-mile stroll through fabulous scenery at Green Mountain Nature Preserve.

Location: 5000 Nature Trail Rd SE, Huntsville, AL 35803
