Two Huntsville City Schools cybersecurity teams named state champions

Last month, the state round of CyberPatriot 18 was held across the country, and two teams from Huntsville are advancing to the semifinals later this month.

What is CyberPatriot?
CyberPatriot is the National Youth Cyber Defense Competition, held annually by the Air & Space Forces Association. It aims to equip students at the middle and high school levels with the necessary skills to pursue a career in cybersecurity upon graduation through simulation, education + inspiration.
Through round-based progression, teams in Cyberpatriot are eliminated based on simulated trials in which participants are tasked with handling the cybersecurity needs of a fictional business.
This year, two Huntsville High teams and one Mountain Gap Middle School team swept the top awards, taking home multiple State Champion titles.

The Huntsville teams absolutely crushed CyberPatriot this year, with 3 teams from the Rocket City earning a spot in the Semifinals later this month.
Huntsville High School Open Division team members:
- Andrew Buchholz, senior
- Walker Williams, senior
- Zyaan Kahn, senior
- Austill Baker, senior
- Owen Brown, junior
- Sam McMillion, sophomore
This team placed in the top 2% of 4,164 high school cybersecurity teams that entered the competition.
Huntsville High School All-Service team members:
- Carson Mignano, senior
- Trip Mosby, senior
- Denson Chatfield, senior
- Lydia Gifford, junior
- Amir Lopez, junior
This team is made up of HHS’s Space Force JROTC unit and competed against all Alabama JROTC and Civil Air Patrol units
Mountain Gap Middle School team members:
- Brayden Weimer
- Miles Crackel
- William Zupko
- Michael Estrict
- Brian Lipscomb
This team competed against other middle schools, earning a spot in the semifinals later this month. Another Mountain Gap team placed fourth in the state as well.
Upon performance in the semifinals, these teams have the opportunity to advance to the National Finals. Good luck to the Panthers and the Knights!
