A mile to remember — stretch of U.S. 72 now honors Agent Billy Clardy III

A one-mile stretch of U.S. 72 has been renamed to memorialize Agent Billy Clardy III, who passed away during active service in 2019.
The Huntsville Police Department (HPD) joined Agent Billy Clardy III’s family, Madison County Sheriff Kevin Turner and other state and city officials at a special ceremony on Tuesday, August 25, where they officially dedicated this section of road to the fallen hero.
“This memorial mile marker is a permanent reminder that Billy was here, that his service mattered and that the impact he made continues today.”

A resolution was unanimously passed in February 2024, which designated a portion of U.S. 72 East to the memory of Agent Clardy. Now, memorial markers have been placed near Chapman Nature Preserve on both eastbound and westbound sides of the road.

Who was Agent Billy Clardy III?
Billy Clardy III served Huntsville as a member of the HPD for more than 20 years, where he worked in the department’s Narcotics Unit.
On December 6, 2019, he was shot in the line of duty while investigating a large-scale drug trafficking operation, and later passed away from his injuries.

Agent Clardy’s service and sacrifice for the Huntsville community will forever be memorialized along this one-mile stretch of U.S. 72.
