New women’s basketball coach Allen Sharpe
Allen Sharpe was hired last week to take over the UAH women’s basketball team. Sharpe becomes the 13th head coach in UAH women’s basketball program history after leading both the Wallace State men’s and women’s teams most recently in 2023-24.
His teams at Wallace State combined for three All-ACCC honorees this season, as the men’s team won the ACCC Division I tournament and the women’s squad were runners-up. His men’s squad also made it to the second round of the 2024 NJCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship.
In a career that spans 22 years, Sharpe owns a record of 496-210 following a 25-6 record with Wallace State’s women’s squad this season to go along with a 26-9 mark on the men’s side.
Prior to returning to Wallace State in 2020 where he was previously head coach from 2005-10, Sharpe led NCAA Division II men’s programs Arkansas-Monticello from 2010-14 and West Alabama from 2014-20 with a career record of 178-114 between the two stints.
He achieved 20 or more wins in four seasons at the Division II level, while reaching the NCAA tournament twice with West Alabama. At UAM, Sharpe was the first-ever coach to achieve four consecutive winning seasons in program history.
Men’s coach Mick Hedgepeth
Hedgepeth becomes the 10th head coach in UAH men’s basketball program history, as he most recently was the leader of the men’s basketball team at Berry College since 2022 with a record of 44-14 with the Vikings.
Total, Hedgepeth has four years of head coaching experience and a career record of 80-32 as he also had a two-season stint at Sewanee from 2017-19.
In his time at Berry, Hedgepeth coached seven CSC Academic All-District honorees, two all-district performers and six all-conference awardees. He was also named Southern Athletic Association Coach of the Year in 2022-23, while leading the Vikings to an SAA Championship and an NCAA Division III tournament appearance in 2023-24.
Hedgepeth also had an impressive playing career at Belmont University from 2008-12, and was honored in the Belmont Athletics Hall of Fame Class of 2023.
He was a part of 96 victories, three conference championships, and two NCAA Tournament appearances while ranking among the program’s career leaders in points, rebounds, field goal percentage and blocked shots.
A welcome ceremony for Hedgepeth and Sharpe will be held on Thursday at 2PM at Spragins Hall.
