We reported earlier this week that Huntsville was in for a cold week, but the weekend weather looks like it will make the last few days seem like summer in Miami.

Okay, that is a bit hyperbolic, but sincerely, this weekend will include some of the lowest temperatures of the year.

This weekend, there is medium chance of a freezing rain and sleet mix in the wake of a powerful cold front, according to the National Weather Service. This is especially significant considering that temperatures are not expected to get above freezing Sunday, which increases the chances of icy conditions possible overnight Saturday and into Sunday morning.

The NWS Huntsville office says Sunday will be “uncomfortably cold” throughout the day.

Tips during freezing weather

Be sure to prepare for the cold weather as the weekend approaches.

  • Plan for very limited/difficult driving Sunday.
  • Make sure your HVAC is functioning properly and if you are using a space heater, make sure it is at least 3 feet away from anything flammable and that it is never plugged into a surge protector.
  • If you are planning on trying to drive, make sure your tires have enough tread and enough air in them, you have a recent oil change, and plenty of antifreeze.
  • Wind chill temps will be sub-freezing all day Sunday so gloves, scarfs, hats, proper footwear and generally very warm clothing will be key.
