How the pre-commitment process works

The Alabama Department of Revenue requires a set number of pre-commitments before a new distinctive plate design goes into production. For the Imagination Library plate, that threshold is 1,000 commitments, and as of now, 412 have been reserved, leaving 588 to go.

What that looks like:

  • Residents can reserve a spot through MyDMV, Alabama’s online portal for vehicle registration and tax services
  • The pre-commitment window is open until May 1, 2027
  • If the plate doesn’t reach 1,000 commitments by the deadline, the money collected goes to the Dollywood Foundation instead, and registrants can request a refund directly from the organization

Where the money goes

Proceeds from the plate would help cover the cost of books mailed each month to children enrolled in Imagination Library in the county where the plate is registered. The program, founded by Dolly Parton in 1995, mails a free book every month to children from birth until they start kindergarten.

Alabamians interested in reserving a plate can do so through MyDMV before the pre-commitment window closes.
