Huntsville’s top industries are aerospace and defense, but the Rocket City also has a significant foothold in education and healthcare, according to U.S. News.

However, a lesser-known job demographic is also emerging in Huntsville—creative, small business owners. All you have to do is take a stroll through Clinton Row or Lowe Mill to see that small businesses are thriving in North Alabama.

In our interviews with downtown Huntsvillians, we discovered several small business owners who were interested in getting a graduate business degree and not just for the typical reasons—promotions and increased earning potential.

Instead, these business owners were interested in the skills an MBA could provide them, such as networking, business management and leadership.

To understand the results from our downtown Huntsville interviews, we sat down with Erin Froman, UNA Career Development Manager, to see why the MBA is so attractive to young professionals.

The MBA curriculum covers leadership, strategic thinking, financial analysis, project management and more. These skill sets are easily transferable across many industries, so the degree prepares students for a wide variety of career paths.”

We were also particularly interested in why young professionals working in the arts—like photography and film—would view an MBA as a viable step in their career.

“If you’re working in the creative sector, you already have a marketable skill set. But you have to know how to market yourself and your creation. The MBA gives you the practical business skills you need in order to get your product into the hands of people and make an income.”

Erin Froman, Career Development Manager, UNA

In addition to bachelor’s degrees in the arts, Froman has also seen young professionals with undergraduate degrees in psychology, early childhood education and culinary arts pursue an MBA to advance their careers.

An MBA could be exactly what you need to move forward in your career—apply to UNA today.

Opportunities to level up your career

Getting an MBA from the University of North Alabama is a small investment with big payoff. According to a study by Poets and Quants, MBA alumni earned roughly $5 million more over a 35-year period than the same-sized group who only possessed an undergraduate degree.

The MBA not only increases your earning potential but also provides the perfect opportunity to pivot your career.

I’ve seen a lot of students go into the MBA program to transition from one field to another. I’ve seen educators go into the MBA program and then transition into business development or sales. I’ve seen psychologists and medical doctors earn an MBA to gain the skills needed to own and operate their private practice.”
