What you need to know about #LitterFreeHSV

Huntsville is cracking down on its garbage problem (City of Huntsville)

Local authorities have shed a lot of light on not only the unsightliness of city litter but also the danger of it. Here’s what you can do to be a more responsible citizen and do your part in keeping Huntsville beautiful.

The problem with littering

The Green Team is a division of the Huntsville Landscape Management Department which tends to matters relating to the local environment. Their director Brian Walker has been focusing more on the particular issue of trash on the roads.

“It is shocking the amount of road debris that flies off the backs of trucks. We have crews that work overnight to clean up roadways when traffic is less of a danger. All our crews routinely collect 28,000 pounds of garbage each week.”

According to Stephen Anderson, Captain of the Huntsville Police Department, drivers often fixate on road litter and get distracted leading to less safe roads making it especially important to take care of litter.

This is why the city is starting their #LitterFreeHSV initiative. Not only are they aiming to reduce litter, but they’re also hoping to eliminate it. Here are some tips the Landscape Management Department gives on helping to solve this issue:

  • Trucks hauling items should have a tarp over them
  • Don’t overfill transport
  • Secure transported cargo to ensure no fall out
  • Call 53-CLEAN (256-532-5326) to report litter for the Green Team to dispose of

Let’s do our part

As we watch Huntsville grow, we have to take even more action to be responsible citizens. Keep these tips in mind and clean up your own garbage to maintain Huntsville’s natural beauty. That’s something we’d like to never lose.

“Natural beauty is part of what makes Huntsville such a special place, but it’s not something we can take for granted. To keep Huntsville beautiful is not something the City can do alone. It’s going to take everyone’s vigilance and participation.”

Tommy Battle, Mayor of Huntsville
