Where to give for those in need during extreme weather

Those of us here in Huntsville are already perhaps feeling a little trapped with roads frozen and many of our businesses in town unable to operate due to this extreme winter weather.
Now imagine if you are one of the hundreds of people in the Huntsville area who are homeless and do not have shelter or a means to prepare food. Homelessness during severe weather is a serious issue and there are ways you can get involved to make the issue perhaps less severe.
Huntsville’s homeless shelters and charities
Huntsville does have some organizations and locations that cater to the city’s homeless population. And you can imagine that these organizations are in need of funds and volunteers to help them fulfill their mission.
Here are a few of the homeless shelters and organizations where you can donate your time, food, clothing, money or other resources (click the org’s name for more information):
- Downtown Rescue Mission: 1400 Evangel Drive NW, Huntsville, AL 35816. For nearly 50 years, Downtown Rescue Mission has provided compassionate programs and services to help men, women and children in North Alabama and South Tennessee.
- First Stop: Located at 206 Stokes St. Huntsville, AL 35805, First Stop connects homeless individuals to critical services and support, and empowers them toward independent sustainable living.
- Rose of Sharon Soup Kitchen: This organization aims to meet the physical and spiritual needs of the homeless and under-privileged in the Huntsville and Madison County areas. They are located at 723 Arcadia Circle Huntsville, AL 35801.
- Salvation Army Emergency Shelter: You can volunteer your time, donate funds or even food and clothing to this shelter. They are located at 305 Seminole Dr SW, Huntsville, AL 35805.
- Manna House: Located at 2110 Memorial Parkway Huntsville, AL 35801, Manna House is the food distribution program of the Huntsville Dream Center, a 501(c)(3) public charity.
Helping out during extreme weather
Warming centers are open as temporary shelter amid the current extreme weather, and can always use donations:
- First SDA Church, 1303 Evangel Drive NW
- The Downtown Rescue Mission, 1400 Evangel Drive NW
- The Salvation Army, 305 Seminole Drive SW
- Community Warming Center at the Livin Room, 2820 Governors Drive
