Huntsville is a unique place in that there are several worthy day trip destinations located nearby. For example, Birmingham, Nashville and Chattanooga, among other places, are within driving distance for a fun day out.

If you haven’t already, be sure to add Guntersville to your list of potential day trip destinations.

There are many reasons this city, only about 45 minutes away from Huntsville, makes for an exciting visit, including the following:

Antiques and trinkets

For hobbyists, Guntersville has no shortage of antique stores and local boutiques to explore, including the following:

  • Antiques & Sweets
  • Fants Inc.
  • Magnolias on Main
  • The Monkey’s Uncle at the Lake
  • The Red Elephant Marketplace

Every store adds a little extra charm to the downtown aesthetic and makes window shopping an absolute treat.

City Harbor

City Harbor is one of the most iconic locations in the city for good reason. Not only does it contain some outstanding views, but it also features several attractions for tourists and locals alike.

You can visit Another Broken Egg Cafe for a brunch on the pier, listen to live music during at Levi’s on the Lake and visit (the soon-to-be-open) Kilwin’s for fudge and other treats.

Personally, I’m quite excited for Kilwin’s to open and would travel to Guntersville just to get some sweet treats. I’ve only been to the Panama City location, but it was by far the best fudge I’ve ever had.

Guntersville Museum

If you’re looking for a dose of local history, Guntersville Museum and other attractions have what you’re looking for. (Cooper Smitherman / Hville Blast)

History buffs can check out the Guntersville Museum to learn more about what makes the city such an interesting place in Alabama.

Located in the historic Rock Armory, the museum houses many Native American artifacts and deep-dives into well-known local figures.

The museum also hosts revolving exhibitions, making it a fun destination for those interested and invested in the humanities.

Lakeside views

Beautiful lakeside views abound throughout the city. These views make for a great place for relaxing outside, studying for classes or fishing.

You can also eat outside at one of City Harbor’s restaurants or have a picnic on the grass for a scenic meal.

Seafood

Guntersville contains one of my favorite seafood joints. Top O’ the River only has three locations in Alabama, making it a unique choice for a nice dinner out.

The family-owned restaurant specializes in its quality farm-raised catfish among its selection of seafood favorites. Additionally, you can relax on the outdoor pier after your meal.

Some other local seafood restaurants include Wintzell’s Oyster House and Crawmama’s, both of which come highly recommended.

Guntersville is a great day trip destination because of these reasons and so much more, but you won’t really know until you visit the city yourself!
