Wondering about trash pickup? Here’s what to know
Reading time: 3 minutes
The entire state of Alabama has been in limbo this past week due to winter weather issues, but North Alabama has definitely seen the worst of it — and that has affected schools, jobs, healthcare, travel and general services like trash pickup in Huntsville-area communities.
The cities of Huntsville and Madison, and officials in Madison and Limestone counties have revised trash pickup schedules for the next next or so. Here’s what we know:
Trash pickup in the Huntsville area
Delays in trash pickup, combined with residents being unable to leave their homes due to road conditions, likely have most households with an overflow of trash that needs to be picked up — immediately — but city officials are asking that residents be patient.
“We apologize for the inconvenience, and we ask for continued patience as we work through these challenges. We ask residents to leave their cans at the curb, and we will collect them as soon as possible.”
Chris McNeese, director of City of Huntsville Public Works
What should Huntsville residents do? Well, go ahead and take those trash bins to the street, apparently.
Trash cans should be left at the curb until they are collected, McNeese said. Residents can temporarily place additional bags (overflow) of household garbage next to bins, which is typically prohibited. Each bag must weigh less than 50 pounds.
New trash pickup schedules
Officials in Madison, Athens, Decatur, Limestone County and Madison County have all been watching the weather to make sure when to resume trash pickup, and none of those communities have been able to run trucks in these conditions.
The consensus among these communities is that essentially trash pickup has been delayed a week. If you were supposed to have your trash and recycling picked up on Tuesday of this week, then expect it to be picked up Tuesday of next week (and so on).
This has not been easy, but we are hoping things get back to normal soon.
