Anyone who has been to Athens knows how friendly the folks in that town really are, but now the welcoming nature of this North Alabama town has received widespread recognition, as World Atlas has included Athens among its 7 Most Welcoming Towns in Alabama.

Here’s who made the list:

World Atlas mentioned Athens attractions like the Alabama Veterans Museum and Archives; the Limestone Sheriff’s Rodeo; the Donnell House and Fort Henderson as aspects of the town that contribute to its welcoming nature.

These attractions, in addition to the North Alabama hospitality, helped place Athens on the publication’s list. In fact, World Atlas included multiple towns in North Alabama on its list.

Among the aspects of Athens that makes it so welcoming and charming are its unique events, especially this time of year. The annual Window Decorations Contest and the Sippin’ Cider Festival were held recently and the winners of each were announced by Athens Main Street.

In the 12th Annual Sippin’ Cider event:

  • EXIT Realty Downhome won the coveted Cider Cup
  • The Sweetest Thing Tea Room was a close runner-up for the Cider Cup

Visitors to downtown Athens also had the opportunity to vote for their favorite merchants’ windows. Patrons voted based on their interpretation of the theme (Bright Lights and Christmas Delights), creativity, and attractiveness. The winners are:

  • Snapdragon Kids, located on Washington Street, won the popular vote
  • The Director’s Choice awards went to Broken Brush Art Studio and Crawford’s Gifts.
