Yes it’s freezing in Huntsville, but it could be worse

If you step outside today (poor you) you will see right away that the temperatures here in the Huntsville area border on unbearable cold. Freezing temperatures have been constant this week, and the next few days won’t be any warmer.
Considering that the lows for the next few days will reach into the single digits, I wondered just where this week ranks among some of Huntsville’s coldest days.
Huntsville is freezing
[6:25 AM] A bone chilling start to the day as area temperatures are in the single digits in NE AL to nearly 10 below zero in portions of southern middle TN. A medium to high chance of showers is expected before another round of dangerous cold arrives Friday night. #HUNwx pic.twitter.com/3YEmY8d4SX

Low temperatures Friday and Saturday will get down to nearly 0 degrees. That’s right. Highs in the 30s and lows in the single digits are expected this weekend.
Maybe more troubling than the temperature alone is that rain is expected on top of those freezing temperatures, which will further hinder travel throughout the area.
Make sure you stay weather aware and take care of yourselves and your kids and pets.
Is this a record-breaking week for Huntsville?
Huntsville projected low temperature of 4 degrees on Saturday is pretty darn cold — especially for Alabama — but believe it or not, that temperature does not even crack the list of the 10 lowest temperatures ever recorded in Huntsville.
According to the National Weather Service, the 10 coldest temperatures recorded in Huntsville are:
- -11 (1/21/1985)
- -11 (1/30/1966)
- -9 (1/20/1985)
- -8 (2/17/1958)
- -8 (1/13/1918)
- -7 (1/28/1940)
- -7 (1/27/1940)
- -7 (1/12/1918)
- -5 (1/31/1936)
- -5 (1/04/1919)
So if you were looking for some optimism during these freezing days in the Rocket City, at least know that it could be (and has been) worse.
